Background of the Study
Urban migration in Nigeria has accelerated over the past decades, driving significant changes in language use among populations shifting from rural to metropolitan areas. This migration has resulted in language contact and consequent language shift, particularly affecting syntactic structures. Traditional sentence constructions often become simplified or altered as migrants adapt their speech to meet urban communication demands and to integrate diverse linguistic influences (Okoro, 2023). In metropolitan centers, speakers frequently blend features of indigenous languages with standardized Nigerian English, leading to a hybrid syntax that reflects both modern urban influences and residual traditional structures (Adeleke, 2024). This study examines these syntactic shifts by analyzing spoken interactions and formal speeches in metropolitan areas. It explores whether the pressures of urban living promote syntactic simplification, convergence toward a standard variety, or even the creation of innovative syntactic forms. The research employs corpus-based analysis and field recordings to document changes, thereby shedding light on the interplay between migration, language contact, and syntactic evolution. Ultimately, understanding these dynamics is essential for language planners and educators aiming to preserve linguistic diversity amid rapid urbanization (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the observable language shifts among urban migrants, there is limited systematic research on how urban migration influences syntactic structures in Nigeria. Most studies have focused on vocabulary change or code-switching, leaving a gap in our understanding of syntactic adaptation in metropolitan contexts (Okoro, 2023). This lack of empirical data impedes efforts to develop language policies that account for the evolving nature of urban speech. Without an in-depth analysis of syntactic patterns in metropolitan areas, educators and policymakers cannot effectively address potential communication challenges or preserve linguistic heritage amid urbanization (Adeleke, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the syntactic consequences of urban migration, informing educators and policymakers on preserving linguistic diversity in metropolitan areas. The findings will contribute to theoretical models of language contact and shift, while also offering practical recommendations for adapting language education in urban contexts (Okoro, 2023; Chinwe, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing spoken and formal language in metropolitan Nigerian areas and does not extend to rural contexts.
